CHAPTER 21
I stood at the back of the store watching the big hole. I was pretty sure that whatever lived in there was gone, but maybe not. The doc and his kids were putting on new snow gear. Julia was now wearing a bright pink snowsuit.
Pink. Not the best choice.
Ever try telling a six year old she can’t wear the cute pink snowsuit?
Pink it is.
I got bored watching the hole and wandered over to the sporting goods department. I checked the drawers and cupboards. I came up with three boxes of shotgun shells. Once these were stowed in my pack I found three backpacks. A big one for the doc and two small ones. I filled a cart with other camping gear they would need.
Oh, I picked up three bottles of ketchup and more Kit Kats. Doc and the kids came back with three shopping carts filled with food.
I sighed.
“Okay, we are trying to avoid the cans because they are too heavy. Not saying we can’t take some, but not a lot. Anything that we can’t cook in one or two pots is a no-go,” I said. The kids looked disappointed. “But chocolate is a real good source of sugar. We need that. So chocolate bars are in.”
That got some big smiles. The kids took off for the candy section. The doctor rolled his eyes.
“What?” I asked. “You worried about cavities? Get a toothbrush. Getting fat? They will be working that candy off in no time. We’re going to move across to the hotel. Get you packed up, make some hot food and get some rest. I’m thinking we might spend the night here.”
“You sure,” Bennett asked, looking back toward the hole. “I saw the hole and bones.”
“There are tracks leaving out of town. I think we are safe for now,” I said, checking the carts and holding two cans of sloppy joe mix. “You got hamburger?”
“No.” The doc said with a laugh. “Kids.”
“We’ll take one. I might be able to bag a rabbit or something.”
“You are a nice person. You act tough but you got a good heart. Before you came along we bumped into a hunter and his three kids. I asked for help. One the kids shot a bullet over Julie’s head. The dad said it was a brave new world and that we should just lie down and die. People always surprise me, and not always in a good way.”
“Hey, normally I would have left you. I am just doing what Reggan would have done. I couldn’t look her in the face if I just ditched you. Come, let’s get this stuff across the street.”
Bennett smiled and shook his head like he didn’t believe me. Maybe I should shoot him in the foot.
Just kidding.
